Viru Keemia Grupp (VKG)
Oil shale is found in many countries around the world, with global reserves being quite extensive. However, it is extracted and processed in only a few select places. In addition to such large countries as Brazil, China, Germany and Israel, at present Estonia is the third country in the world where oil shale is being processed on an industrial scale. There are two main fuel products manufactured from oil shale: shale oil and shale gas.
VKG is the largest manufacturer of shale oil and chemicals in Estonia. In 2012, the processing capacity of the group amounted to 2.4 million tonnes of oil shale, and the amount of produced crude oil reached 365,000 tonnes. VKG’s business covers the entire oil shale processing chain, starting with extraction and processing and finishing with the marketing of fine chemicals.
The enterprise is also one of the most respected local developers in terms of caring about its employees and the local community. In 2010, VKG joined a powerful international initiative for social responsibility – the UN Global Compact and Global Reporting Initiative.
Globally, VKG ranks second in terms of its processing capacities, after the oil shale processing facility in Fushun, China, and ahead of the oil shale processing company Petrobras, in Brazil.
VKG Oil AS, a subsidiary of the VKG, is the leading Estonian enterprise in the production of shale oil and oil shale chemistry. Due to its useful properties, shale oil produced by VKG is in high demand by ships navigating the harsh conditions of the Arctic and Atlantic Oceans. Fine chemical products generated from oil shale are used in the perfumery and cosmetics industries, electronics, as well as in the production of luxury cars. The enterprise produces over 250,000 tonnes of shale oil each year, with over 2 million tonnes of the so-called “brown gold” being processed annually.
In 2009, VKG Oil AS won the title of Best Estonian Enterprise.
